Before
Project
The project, situated in Osaka’s very popular Tanimachi 6, takes place on the ground floor of a building where the tenant wanted to create a bar and small shop.
The aim was to build a space that was as “generous and open” as possible, appropriate for “home meals and comfort food ” and a “shop that is not utterly luxurious and affordable”. Inside, the space is simply longitudinally divided into two parts, one being the kitchen/seating counter and the other the shop. These two areas are framed by a very large existing window facing the front street and working like an advertising billboard, enabling passers-by and neighbors to get a glimpse of the interior space, open to all.
Space
In order to maximize the volume, the entire interior was stripped to expose the frame. The height and direction of the lights, color temperature, and floor level were varied little by little to allow the bar and shop to coexist without having to vertically partition them, while softly dividing their respective areas. The bar side has a luminous surface on the ceiling and the general store side has a luminous surface on the ceiling.
On the bar side, indirect lighting with the luminous surface facing the ceiling was used with a low color temperature and hung 2,000 mm from the floor to keep the center of gravity low. The kitchen and seating areas are set at different floor levels to facilitate eye contact between the customers and the owner, and the physical distance between the customers and the owner is kept close, creating a calm space conducive to lively conversation.
The shop, on the other hand, was designed with the lighting hung 600mm higher than that of the bar, creating a space in which visitors can feel a connection with the adjacent street.
Particleboard, which is normally used as a base material rather than a finish, was used as a common finishing material to give the space more simplicity.
